NameWays to Increase Your UMD: Highest Possible in the Game
CategoryGeneral
Use Magic Device is a class skill for bards and rogues and a cross-class skill for others. It is one of the many skills you can put points on. It is considered a trained-only skill because you need to train at least one rank in order to make good use of it.

So you invested points on the UMD, now what? Well, depending on how high your UMD skill points are, you can use or activate Wands and Scrolls even if you do not have the specific spells in your spell list. In the case of a Rogue, who doesn't have any spells, he or she can use wands and scrolls either to heal or buff other party members or himself.

A character usually puts points in UMD and make it really high so that they can use scrolls or wands that are not in their list. This character must then roll a Use Magic Device check equal or higher to the Difficulty Class (DC) of the wands or scrolls. The formula is d20 + UMD modifier. Each attempt, whether successful or not will lose a charge of the wand or a scroll. The DC for using a wand is equal to 18 plus twice the wand's caster level.

Another reason why players increase their UMD skill is that if they have a high enough UMD, they can bypass the restrictions of items and weapons. As we all know there are awesome items that are restricted to a specific race, class or alignment. If you are not the right race, class or alignment, then you lose out on the benefits of using the items or weapons.

With a high UMD, you can always bypass the restrictions and enjoy the benefits. The DC of restricted item usually starts at 20. So you need 20 or higher UMD Skill. If you have less than 20, then you cannot use the items or weapons. You can temporarily increase your UMD using Eagle's Splendor or Rogue's Action Boost, but once the buffs run out, then you will get a warning or an icon on your uppermost screen saying that you are not the right race or class, or alignment.

In the game, UMD is affected by Charisma. The more charisma you have, the higher your UMD modifier will be if you continuously put points to the UMD skill every time you level. Since Charisma is important in increasing UMD, the Bards and Sorcerers generally benefit from this. Rogues need to actually pump up their charisma to get really good UMD skill points. Same goes for other classes, but since they are cross class skill, a one skill point will only increase your UMD by half, or 0.5.

So, do you really need UMD? The answer depends on how you play your characters. If you want to be self-sufficient then it's worth putting points on UMD so you can use wands and scrolls to buff and heal yourself during battle. You will be doing clerics a big favor. Remember, wands are cheaper than potions. So if you are UMD-heavy, then you can save a lot on plat.

If you usually do supporting roles in the game, then it is advisable that you put points in UMD so you can help heal and buff the party. This is what usually happens when you have a bard, rogue and sorcerer in the party. Some players invest on UMD so that they can cast HEAL spell (via scrolls) on themselves or on other toons when the cleric is slacking. This can also be useful when the cleric is about to go down and he can't heal himself because he keeps getting interrupted.

UMD is important and it is something that Bards and Rogues are especially proud to have. It's easy to increase your UMD with buffs and songs as well as items. But really, the only number you need is 40 and above because even the most difficult scrolls to cast only has a DC of 44.

Here is a list of scrolls that are usually used. They are mostly for buffing and healing and less on crowd control. For healing, the Heal Scroll is popular, for buffing, its divine power, prayer, and recitation. Other scrolls are used to remove diseases or stat damage (restoration, etc.). The rest are symbols that are used for crowd control.

=======
Now that you know the DCs of some of the most popular scrolls, you need to pump up your UMD points. Bards usually are able to do this more than any other class. So, the example here will be a bard.

HUMAN BARD WITH 42 CHARISMA

18: Base
4: Level
9: Crafted Weapon
3: +3 Charisma Tome
4: Enhancements
3: Alchemical
1: Litany
-----------
42: Total Charisma

ADD RANKS, BUFFS, ITEMS

19: Ranks
16: Cha
6: Charisma Item
5: Titan Raid Glove
2: Reaver Item
4: Greater Heroism
2: Spellsinger Song
2: Inspire Competence from another Bard
5: Human Boost (20 seconds)
3: Alchemical skills
3: Skill Focus: UMD (Enhancement)
1: Focus Chant spell
----
68: TOTAL UMD by LEVEL 16

This number is already very high. You can cast all scrolls and use wands no matter the difficulty and there will be no arcane spell failure. You can heal, raise dead, buff and save yourself and other party members. You can only get such high numbers if you have all the wonderful items from the raid, especially the glove that drops in the Titan Raid. It rarely drops so not everyone has it. Perhaps if you do the raid everyday on all your toons, then you can get it. If you can't get it, you can use the Golden Cartouche that drops at Delera's series. It gives +3 to UMD and the drop rate is better than the one in Titan.

If you can't bring the number to 68, then be very happy with 40. There will be little chance of spell failure.
